Truffles at Glastonbury

The end of June saw perhaps the most important fixture on the summer festival calendar in the form of The Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, commonly abbreviated to Glastonbury or Glasto. Glastonbury is the largest greenfield music and performing arts festival in the world with over 130,000 tickets sold for this years event. As part of the festival, there is a large area called the ‘Green Fields’. The Green Fields are about change and discovery - learning how to release your own potential, and discovering how to change the world. The Green Fields are about doing things for ourselves, but at the same time doing them in a way that is communal, inclusive and caring. Permacultre features heavily in the Green Fields and truffle cultivation fits in very nicely with the ethos and ideas of this system. As part of the celebrations, we’ve been helping the organizer of Glastonbury, Emily Eavis, to start her own truffle orchard and bring truffles to Glastonbury. Who knows, in a few years’ time as well as Glastonbury selling its own milk to the festival goers, Glastonbury truffles could also be distributed!

The prime tree planting time November – March is upon us. Traditionally, November to March are good months to plant, as the trees are dormant and planting in the winter allows the truffley-roots plenty of time to settle in before mycorrhiza and root-growth starts again in spring.
